Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 9–15 m tall.

Stems: Bark grayish brown, fibrous throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 10–22 cm long, 1.3–3 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 20–30 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles flattened, 5–15 mm long, pedicels absent. buds ovoid, angular, 7–11 mm long, 3–6 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovules with axile placentation.

Fruit: Fruit cylindrical; 6–10 mm long; 6–8 mm wide; valves 3–4; level or included. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on O'ahu and Hawai'i; and regenerating within or near the plantations.
